The types of engraving

All signet rings are massive, except for intaglios where they are openwork. The use here has an important historical meaning. The signet ring and its personalized engraving brings a strong added value. So I have done little faith this work on silver, but still does it on brass for manual seals.

There are two types of engravings :

The engravings to seal

Not knowing how to write, the lords of the Middle Ages put their seal at the bottom of the documents in the form of a wax seal. For the mirror effect, your weapons on your ring will be hollow and upside down.
I deliver you your engraving to seal with its imprint on wax stamp, for proof of respect of techniques and good readability.

The engravings to read

Visual signs of belonging to a family to the history of a country, the weapons were carved in relief on the pediment of the houses. They are therefore to be read.
It is possible to apply this technique (less common) on signet rings, patterned engraving, or simply intaglio engraving.
These different techniques are feasible on the following materials.

Gold engraving 750°/°

I can make your signet ring and its personalized engraving on :

  • Yellow gold ;
  • Rose gold ;
  • Grey gold ;
  • Palladium grey gold.

 

Less fragile than stone, metal engraving is the most resistant to time.

Stone engraving

Of intaglio on stones or precious stones:

  • Nicollo blue, nicollo red or nicollo green (two-tone agate) ;
  • Onyx (black) ;
  • Carnelian (brick red, orange) ;
  • Lapis lazuli (blue) ;
  • Topaz ;
  • Sapphire or ruby ;
  • Others, depending on crystal compatibility.

Some tone-on-tone effects will be most remarkable (nicollo). In any case, the stone is set on the plate of the signet ring.

Tray shapes

All signet rings being massive, the plates have a thickness ranging from 1.8 mm to 2.5 mm depending on the model. Engraving reduces the final weight of signet rings from 0.2 to 1.0 gr depending on the complexity of the work.
I propose different shapes of trays "oval" or "antique rectangle". I can also create a special shape for your signet ring and its personalized engraving based on a personal drawing.
